Biography
Barış Yiğitcan Duran has commenced his doctoral studies within the PhD program at VUB's Faculty of Law and Criminology, effective from October 2023. Distinguished as the top graduate in his cohort, Barış possesses a Bachelor's degree in law from Izmir Economy University, where he concurrently undertook the rigorous bar traineeship. His academic journey includes the acquisition of a Master of Arts degree from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, coupled with an LL.M. (magna cum laude) from Koç University in Istanbul, Türkiye, with a specialized focus on the intricate intersection of cybersecurity and legal frameworks. Noteworthy is Barış’s longstanding membership in the Izmir Bar Association in Türkiye, a commitment he has maintained since the year 2017. Since the inception of his legal career, he has been providing services in the fields of criminal law, and data protection/data security in both the European and Turkish contexts, as well as information technology law and commercial law.
In his doctoral project he will be concentrating on the implications of integrating quantum algorithms into Edge Computing applications supported by 5G technology, examining the challenges it may pose to existing European Union data protection legal benchmarks. The research specifically addresses how such integration may create challenges and explores potential solutions to address these issues within the current legal framework.
